Book Recycling

Hard and soft covered books are recycled a variety of ways at the MVAW Recycling Center.  All books are purchased from the public at the rate of one penny per pound (except telephone books, which are accepted but not purchased).

Books are an important source of paid jobs for people with disabilities, and we are actively soliciting books from all sources, including forming partnerships with area schools and libraries.

Destinations of books include:

·        Bibles are donated to local church groups

·        Children’s books are donated to local day care centers

·        Sellable books are listed for sale on amazon.com under the name “MVAW books”.  Job tasks created through book selling include scanning ISBN codes to determine salability, listing books for sale, labeling and shelving books, pulling sold books from the shelf, and packaging books for shipment.  AND re-using a product in it’s current form is the most efficient form of recycling!

·        Non-sellable books are disassembled so that the paper may be baled and sold with other papers.  Disassembling books is also a much-appreciated source of paid jobs for people with disabilities.
